Inorganic nitrogen metabolism by Antarctic phytoplankton with special reference to ammonium cycling

چکیده
Nitrogen metabolism of planktonic populations in coastal waters of the southern Scotia Sea was studied in February-March 1981 aboard R/V M e l d l e . In spite of the high concentration of nitrate present in these waters (21 to 29 FM), up to 93 % of phytoplankton nitrogen was assimilated in the form of ammonium, with the overall mean being 78 %. Time course experiments showed that uptake of nitrate and ammonium during nighttime amounted to approximately 15 and 50 %, respectively, of daytime values. This light dependency of nitrate, and to a lesser extent ammonium, is reflected in the depth profiles of nitrate and ammonium assimilation. Over the shallow waters of the Scotia Arc close to Elephant Island, most of the ammonium uptake was assoc~ated wlth nanoplankton (< 20 ,pm size). Estimating the flux of ammonium through the food web from the biomass and metabolic activities of bacteria, phytoplankton and zooplankton suggests that heterotrophic microbial organisms are responsible for most of the ammonium which is regenerated and assirmlated by phytoplankton. Data from isotope dilution experiments confirmed that micrograzers do account for most of the regenerated ammonium. The high concentrahons of ammonium in these coastal waters (average of 2.1 FM) are discussed relative to seasonal events and to zooplankton activity.

Utilization of inorganic and organic nitrogen by bacteria in marine systems1
The relative contribution of various inorganic and organic forms of nitrogen to the nitrogen requirements of picoplankton was examined with 15N tracers. Size fractionation was used to measure uptake by < l-pm size microorganisms, and inhibitors of protein synthesis were used to separate procaryotic from eucaryotic nitrogen uptake, Picoplankton utilized mainly ammonium and amino acids and only n...
متن کاملAmmonium Uptake by Phytoplankton Regulates Nitrification in the Sunlit Ocean
Nitrification, the microbial oxidation of ammonium to nitrate, is a central part of the nitrogen cycle. In the ocean's surface layer, the process alters the distribution of inorganic nitrogen species available to phytoplankton and produces nitrous oxide. A widely held idea among oceanographers is that nitrification is inhibited by light in the ocean. However, recent evidence that the primary or...
متن کاملInorganic carbon removal and isotopic enrichment in Antarctic sea ice gap layers during early austral summer
The biogeochemical composition of 2 spatially separate surface gap layers on a single Antarctic sea ice floe during early austral summer was predominantly controlled by the growth of diatoms and, especially, Phaeocystis. These algal communities in and near the gap layers imposed large geochemical changes in the chemical and isotopic composition of the gap waters, typical of intense autotrophic ...

When cells of Chlorella are grown in a medium containing a limiting quantity of nitrate or ammonia as nitrogen source, photosynthesis and cell division continue after all the available nitrogen in the medium has been abstracted by the growing plants. The cells become nitrogen-deficient. When kept in darkness with added nitrate these nitrogen-deficient cells synthesize a considerable quantity of...
متن کاملInteractions of light and inorganic nitrogen in controlling nitrogen uptake in the sea*
-The uptake of ammonium and nitrate in natural populations of marine phytoplankton is light dependent and often can be described adequately by the Michaelis-Menten equation. The halfsaturation constant for light intensity in nitrate and ammonium uptake is found to be from 1 to 14 ~o of surface light intensity, an intensity range occurring near the bottom of the euphotic zone. Since the uptake o...
